About 10 pages in, which doesn’t sound like much, but I’m going at single-spaced, Arial 10pt, so it’s some dense stuff. I’m a good way into a harsh confrontation between Michael and his wife Eryn. As with so much in this story, this relationship is in serious trouble. 5 years of festering emotional wounds. Not a fun mental space to slip into, but it’s important to establish the psychology for Michael and Eryn, together and separately, so that their reactions to the first major plot point make perfect (if heart-wrenching) sense.
Here’s an odd side to it. I’ve always seen this story, at least in my head, as possessing a very strong “paranormal” slant. It’s a dark fantasy thriller (talk about cross-genre), and I always struggled with the feeling that it would be too “obvious” in its fantasy elements. But if anyone were to read the story so far, there’s absolutely nothing that hints at a “paranormal” world. It reads more as an intricate mystery novel.
In my head, it played as the story of Sean, a character with a massive “fantasy” background. Michael was this side character that was necessary as a foil, but I never had a sense of him beyond that. Now, however, it’s clear that the story is really a balance between Sean and Michael. To speak in very general and familiar terms, Sean lives and breathes in the world of the fantastic and magical, while Michael exists in a world of grounded pragmatism. There’s a single event that drives those two worlds into collision, which is going to be a lot of fun to explore!
But first, Michael and his sad, obsessive little world!
