The Resistance: Episodes 3&4

A little sex, a little drama, a little violence.  A lot more than I was expecting out of this little experiment, I must admit.  Duck’s wife is quite the hottie, even in the New Caprica garb, so it’s a shame that she was the victim of an off-screen Cylon raid.  I suppose it will force Duck into the right psychological space to become a member of the resistance, if they choose to go that way, or it could be a reason for him to betray the resistance and join the New Caprica Police.  Either way, it means more Duck, which is something I’m still on the fence about.

What else is there to say?  The budget shows its serious limitations by having the Cylon attack take place completely off-screen, but since that kind of content was never in the cards anyway, it was good enough to get the job done.  Once again, having the established cast members in the mix is a great idea, lending credibility to the whole deal.  The minor characters may be the ones in the crosshairs, but seeing Callie in peril drives the point home.

The Resistance: Episodes 1&2

So it looks like this whole “webisode” concept is beginning to take off with a lot of networks, expanding on the whole “mobisode” thing that was all the rage in recent years.  “The Office” is currently doing this as well, but they can keep the budget fairly low.  This is impressive because it looks like they filmed these while filming the actual episodes of the third season.  It’s a very nice touch.

Thus far, the story seems to be focusing on a resistance movement controlled by Tigh and Tyrol, with new mother Callie along for the ride.  It answers one question right off the bat: there is, indeed, a huge gap between the end of the second season and the third season premiere.  And more importantly, it gives the audience a chance to get the basic idea down: some of the characters will be in familiar waters when the season begins.

There are three new characters as well, with the central drama being the choice between flying low under the Cylons’ radar, cooperating with the New Caprica Police effort (hinted to be collaborators), or helping prepare for the fight to come.  There’s no sense of whether or not the resistance has made a move yet, but they do seem to be preparing for something big.  I would assume it’s something to come in the premiere.

I personally found the new characters forgettable, and I doubt they will be on the actual show come October.  Of course, that’s just a judgment based on the fact that they are clearly less experienced actors.  They could be background players in the premiere for all I know, getting a moment to shine in this “prologue”.  All I can say is that 5 minutes of material hasn’t left me with any kind of lasting impression.  I don’t even remember the characters’ names!

Whatever the case, it’s not full-tilt “BSG”, but it’s like getting a short story by the author leading into the book he’s having published in a month or so.  It gets you back into the rhythm of the story, and it cements the situation on New Caprica very quickly and effectively.  Considering that this didn’t cost them very much to do, it’s a good sign.
