A story such as this one does not come about without some help along the way. The first round of acknowledgements has to go to Chris Carter and 1013 Productions for creating “The X-Files” in the first place. This is their world I’m playing in.
The second nod has to go to Robert Patrick for his portrayal of Agent John J. Doggett, an actor whose personal intensity permeates every frame of film he happens to be appearing in. Similar praise goes to Annabeth Gish, who I look forward to seeing in the seasons to come.
I would also like to thank the wonderful group of ladies (and some courageous fellow men) who inhabit the Medusa Lounge thread on About.com’s X-Files Fan Forum. They have been an endless source of inspiration and friendship over the past 18 months, and I look forward to reviewing the next season with them. Special mention goes to Uberlisa, DJXFI60, and the other unusual suspects, who have been reading the chapters from the beginning and keeping my spirits up with encouragement along the way.
Perhaps it is fitting, then, that the reigning matriarch of the Medusa Lounge, MeridyM, should be the last person I mention. I had been tossing around ideas for “Eternal Silence” for a few weeks before actually putting fingers to keyboard. Throughout the process, Meridy has provided a great deal of advice and support. As it happens, we found that our creations fit well together, and as a down payment on a possible future project, she referenced one of my previous stories, “Chasing Shadows”, in her latest creation. I thought it only fitting that I should return the favor.
This story has been waiting to be told for several years, and while there have been some attempts to work it into a novel of its own, fitting it into the “X-Files” universe seemed to mesh well with the concept when the details of Agent Doggett’s past became clear, late in the eighth season. As some know from my comments on the forum, several events in this story are based on actual accounts and experiences. Following the story, there will be an afterword that details what events are inspired by real life.
As always, I give thanks to anyone who is kind (or annoyed) enough to send me comments or criticisms.
