"Without"

<----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->

I have to say that this should have laid the Doggett fears to rest. There is obviously quite a bit of tension between Scully and the new guy, and that should show up rather nicely over the next few weeks. But in the end, Doggett is one of the good guys. Perhaps too good...it seems that Kersh is trying to eliminate his competition by placing him in a seeming no-win situation.

More and more I get the impression that Kersh is nothing more than a man with more ambition than his talents can provide for...making him the perfect tool for the Syndicate.

There were some interesting subtle pieces of information here that occured to me as I was watching this episode. The Mulder torture scenes are now confirmed as having been real, making it clear that Scully is psychically connected to her partner.

Oh, and the brothers Morph were an out-of-nowhere revelation. This actually confuses the past mythology even more, but not enough to kill it. It might actually fix some of the little seeming differences in personality of our dear Bounty Hunter(s). (And it does harken back to "Emily", in a way.)

Some other comments:

- This episode had a lot of those typical Chris Carter "Kewl!" moments, the ones that make no sense except to look or sound neat. Such as the Bounty Hunter awkwardly cracking his broken arm back into place, and then smoothly morphing back into his usual shape!

- Where the heck are the "more prominent" Krycek and Marita? Maybe they're somewhere "working out their differences"...

- For a tight FBI operation, it was rather easy for Scully and Skinner to sneak away, wasn't it?

- Throughout the Scully-choking-the-agent scene, all I could think of was, "This is why you don't piss off the pregnant woman..."

- We actually got a hint about the multiple Bounty Hunters when after the choking scene, we saw the "deaf girl" looking ominously at the agent standing in the middle of the crowd with blood dripping off his hand. (Why didn't the other agents notice this???) Obviously, Gibson's little girlfriend was replaced.

- Oh, back to that scene. The deaf girl riding off into the desert (again, great security, Doggett...) as night falls. Scully, who suffers from night sickness remember, goes running into the cold desert night, wearing little more than that very low cut and tight designer T-shirt (which I took special note of, for the purely objective purposes of this review)...running fast enough to keep up with the girl on the mountain bike!!!

- How did the dirt get back on top of the trap door, if the deaf girl just opened it? Gibson's telepathic, not telekinetic...

- How many people wanted Skinner to turn to Scully at some point and ask, "So, seven years working for me, and this is the first time you mention the freakin' alien bounty hunters???" (Or was everyone else trying to figure out why he seemed to not know about them, when Mulder and Scully seemed to mention everything *else* in their reports!)

- My wife called it. That new music, whatever it is, can now be called the "Lost and Lonely, Pregnant Scully" theme!

- Speaking of which, Skinner grabs Gibson, asks Scully if she's coming with him out of the freezing cold desert night (while she's barely wearing clothes)...and then he walks off without another word! Well, that couch in the hiding place was kinda comfy looking...

- Is there something about helicoptors in the X-Files world that makes them really, really quiet until they are right on top of you? Because I swear, everyone always thinks they're UFOs on this show!

- Oh, and speaking of the big, honkin' searchlight on the 'coptor, I still can't figure out how come they didn't notice the massive distortion field sitting right next to Scully. I mean, flashlights made this thing show up in "Requiem", strong sunlight in "Within", but not the searchlight? I guess that Doggett was too busy scoping out the uncanny amount of cleavage that Scully was showing off with that T-shirt.

- I still can't figure out why Skinner is still alive, but then again, others have been exposed to the green goo before and lived to tell about it. I guess it depends on all kinds of exposure vectors and such.

- Scully needs to be careful about all these hospital trips, if she really wants to hide her pregnancy. I mean, it's gotta be right there on her chart! I can just see her waking up with Doggett, the Lone Gunmen, etc...standing all around her with this "you wanna tell us something?" look on their faces!

- Still, damn fun episode. Much better than last year's trilogy. Can't wait to see what we get next week...I wonder if Skinner will be showing up at all?

I give it an 8/10. Definitely one to watch again (and not because of Scully's wardrobe, OK?).
